Born in Ireland in 1963, Thomasina
Sawyer spent her childhood in Kenya, and the
Indian Ocean islands of Mauritus and Seychelles. During her early
childhood in
East Africa, she became familiar with the great national parks
and game reserves,
and with the lifestyle of the nomadic tribespeople such as the
Masai and the
Samburu. As a teenager, she lived among the island influences
of British, French,
Hindu, and Chinese culture, also being exposed to geological
formations, plants,
and animals endemic to these remote regions. Returning to Ireland
to complete her
education, she began to take an interest in painting. She has
since lived on the
Carribean island of Antiguilla, in London, and presently works
and lives in
Montpelier, France.
"Religion fascinates me, whatever religion; it's the thought
of all these 'ropes' being
thrown out by diverse peoples, to some otherworldly or 'higher'
channels that justify
extraordinary acts of compassion and loathing, ecstasy and fear."
Thomasina Sawyer
